England’s first knockout match was in the 1966 quarterfinals against Argentina. They then took on Portugal in the semifinals and West Germany in the final to lift the trophy. In 1970 they met West Germany again in the quarterfinals and lost. After missing knockout rounds in 1982, they returned in 1986 with a round-of-16 win over Paraguay before falling to Argentina in the quarterfinals.
